The dupatta is the most versatile piece in your wardrobe. The same length of fabric can feel traditional, relaxed or fashion-forward depending on how you wear it. Here are five drapes we return to again and again.
1. The classic front drape
Bring the dupatta over both shoulders so it falls evenly at the front. Ideal for religious occasions and formal family events, and it shows off a full embroidered border.
2. Over one shoulder
Gather the dupatta and let it fall over one shoulder, pinned at the back. This is our go-to for receptions: it keeps the kameez visible and frames the face.
3. The loose wrap
Drape the dupatta around the back and let both ends fall forward over your arms. Effortless and modern, perfect with co-ords and daytime looks.
4. The belted drape
Pleat a lightweight dupatta over one shoulder and secure it at the waist with a slim belt. A contemporary silhouette that works especially well with straight-cut trousers.
5. The head drape
For nikkahs and prayers, bring the dupatta over the head and let it fall softly on both sides. Choose a lighter fabric such as chiffon or organza so it stays in place comfortably.
Whichever drape you choose, a couple of small pins in a matching colour will keep everything exactly where you want it.
